Jacob Edward Ledgerwood

Jacob Edward (Ed, Eddie) Ledgerwood passed into the loving arms of his heavenly father to be rejoined with his wife and sweetheart of 68 years, Margaret who preceded him in death in 2004. Services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, June 8, 2012 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Rose Street Chapel, 1036 W. Rose Street. Viewing will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, June 7th at Kayser’s Chapel and from 1 to 1:45 p.m. on Friday, June 8th at Rose Street Chapel. Interment will be at Valley View Memorial Park in Soap Lake. Jacob was born in Trinity Springs, Indiana on October 2, 1918 just after the Great Influenza outbreak, and the end of WWI. His parents were Raymond Nathaniel Ledgerwood, and Myrtle Lulu Divine. He was the 6th child born in a family of eight boys and three girls, one sister dying in infancy. In 1937 Jacob moved with his family to Oregon, where they farmed near the town of Ontario. Jacob worked on his parents farm through WWII, and later took on jobs with the Game Farm and the Amalgamated Sugar plant located there. Jacob met and married Margaret Charity Soper in Payette, ID in 1948, and they made their home in Nyssa, ID near the Nyssa sugar plant he was then working in. In 1949, their first child, Gary, was born. In 1952, Jacob moved with his family to Washington to work on the new Columbia Basin Irrigation Project starting up there. This project was part of the "New Deal" projects supported by President Roosevelt. In 1953 Jacob and his family moved to Moses Lake where Jacob became employed as an irrigation operator (ditch rider) for the local Irrigation District. Also in 1953, their second child, Ann was born. Jacob continued to work with the Columbia Basin Project until he retired in 1980, getting to know many of the farming pioneers of the area. Jacob and Margaret were members of a local rock hound club, the 4x8 Square dance club and the Block 40 club. They enjoyed gardening, collecting antique bottles, and the many activities their church did. Jacob and Margaret were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and they served a mission to Pittsburgh, Tennessee in 1985-86. They were members of the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th wards during the years they lived in Moses Lake. Jacob was a dedicated and humble servant and loved his Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ with all his heart. Jacob dearly loved his children and grandchildren, and would always have a story or a bit of history to share with them when they visited. They loved sharing the bounties of their garden with their children and neighbors. Jacob continued to live in Moses Lake, eventually moving into assisted living at Hearthstone Inn in Moses Lake, where he continued to live after Margaret passed away in 2004. During these years he spent many happy occasions with his daughter Ann's family, who live in Moses Lake. In 2011, health issues forced a decision to move him to Salem, OR, where he could receive better health care and be near his son, Gary and his family. Jacob is survived by his children and their spouses, Gary and Nicolaza Ledgerwood of Salem, OR, Ann (Ledgerwood) and Ralph Dillon of Moses Lake, two brothers, Clyde Ledgerwood of Quincy, WA, and Rodney and (Joann) Ledgerwood of Kennewick, WA. Six grandchildren, Richard, Victoria, Michelle Ledgerwood, Nicole Frazier, Matthew Dillon, and Crystal Wiberg. 9 great-grandchildren, Richard Jr, Myranda and Alexandria Ledgerwood, Katelyn Dillon, Camrey, Charity, Joseph, Jacob, and Jared Wiberg, Cole Frazier, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers, Xenil, Harold, Carl, Floyd, and Dale, and 3 sisters, Faith, Ruby Dyal, and Lois Sutton. Jacob was loved by all who knew him, and especially his family will miss him dearly until they can be reunited with him again in Heaven.
