March 22, 1938 - July 12, 2021
Margareta “Greta” McCornack passed away at 83 in the comfort of her own home in the early hours of Monday, July 12. Her final days were marked by the presence of family and loved ones. Greta was born March 22, 1938, in Seattle, Washington, the first of two children born to her parents, Peter and Ida Johanson. She graduated from West Seattle High School in 1956 and went on to obtain a degree in Christian Education from Puget Sound College of the Bible in1960. Greta briefly accepted a job as Secretary for the Huntington Christian Church in Southern California before returning to Washington State as the youth minister for West Seattle Christian Church in 1961. During this time, she started seeing Jerry McCornack, a pastor at Lake Sawyer Church of Christ, and they were married October 5th, 1962. Greta loved her status as Preacher’s Wife. They served from 1962 – 1983. When Jerry resigned from LSCC, the couple began attending Issaquah Christian Church where many lifelong relationships were formed. Preacher’s wife or not, Greta was always involved in ministry; from leading Bible studies to attending Christian camps, her life revolved around her church community. And yet as much energy as she put into serving the Lord, the love of being wife and mother of four was not to be matched. After raising their four children, Jerry and Greta sold their home in Kent, Washington in the early 90’s and began building a house on Long Beach Peninsula in Southern Washington. This project would not be complete until 1966 because Greta found herself fighting breast cancer in 1992, halting construction. The McCornacks would settle down in their new Ocean Park home in 1966, where they started attending Peninsula Baptist Church. Kerry and Greta were both active and engaged in the ministry at PBC, where they also made deep relationships that have continued through the years. They would make a final move to Moses Lake, Washington in 2006 to be closer to their children’s families and would call this home for the remainder of their days, joining their final church family at Moses Lake Christian Church. Greta was widowed in 2011, and afterwards found life in giving herself to youth ministry or the lives of the children in her neighborhood. Everyone knew her as Grandma Greta. Greta is survived by her brother, Peter (Micky) Johanson of Loveland, Colorado, and her four children: Scott (Diana) McCornack, Ferndale, Washington; Sharlyn (John) Roberts, Moses Lake, Washington; Wade (Allison) McCornack, Mount Vernon, Washington; and Dawn (Sam) Woyke, Moses Lake, Washington. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren: Brendan (Amanda, Audrey, and Ava) McCornack, Jocelyn McCornack, Morgan McCornack, Decon (Sara) McCornack, Jonathan Roberts, Joshua (Kara, Vida, and Arlo) Roberts, Noah Roberts, Benjamin McCornack, Patrick McCornack, Lauren Woyke, Beau (Beth) Woyke, and Alec (Anneli) Woyke. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 28th at 2:00 PM at Moses Lake Christian Church. If you would like more information, contact MLCC at (509)766-1581. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to Moses Lake Christian Church Youth Ministry. Greta loved working with the students at MLCC - and everywhere she lived.
