Peggy Elaine Hill

Peggy E. Hill, 80, of Moses Lake, passed away at home June 13, 2010 after a courageous battle with lung cancer. She was born in Edmonds, Washington on October 29, 1929 to Leonard and Lily Joyce. Her parents divorced when she was eleven, and she spent a lot of time with her grandparents in Poulsbo, as well as sharing time between her parents in Cle Elum and Bremerton. She married Elmer (Berry) Berryhill in 1946, moving to Ellensburg where he worked at the Daily Record. Not quite pioneers, they moved to Moses Lake in 1951 when the Columbia Basin Herald was established as a daily newspaper. She went to night school to obtain her high school diploma and worked at sorting spuds and asparagus to help out with family finances. She loved animals and started working for Dr. Bodie at the Vet Clinic, becoming a veterinary assistant and she worked for him 25 years before being forced to retire due to allergic problems with chemicals. She continued to clip dogs and breed poodles for many years. An avid bowler, she was proud of having won tournaments at both the city and state levels, and even went to Nationals one year. She loved the water and the family spent most summer weekends boating and skiing on the lake. Divorced in the early 1970’s, she later married Arlo Hill, continuing to raise and groom dogs and help him in his excavating business. They bought a motorhome and started traveling, and after retirement became full time RVers. She loved to follow the sun each year to park out on the desert near Salton City, California, meeting people who came from all over the US to winter there as a family. She continued to visit Salton City after Arlo’s death in 2002, until moving into her current home on the lake. The last five years she has enjoyed watching the birds on the lake, working jigsaw puzzles and making jam. An Eagles Auxiliary member for 40 years, she made a trip to the Lodge part of her daily routine, and started taking jam to share. She became known as the ‘Jam Lady’ and many people enjoyed her creations. She is survived by daughters Regan Bonato of Moses Lake and Toni (Dennis) Beasley of Yakima, grandsons Barry (Dawn) Schrag, Kenneth (Yasuko) Schrag, Les (Tesen) Beasley, granddaughter Nancy (Joe) Spencer, great-grandchildren Katarina and Kennan Schrag and Alexis Spencer, good friend Tony Bonato, and many friends at the Eagles Lodge and in Salton City. She was predeceased by her parents, brother William, and husbands. The Eagles Lodge will hold a get-together to remember her life on July 11th from 2:00-4:00 pm.
