Judith C. Black

Judith C. Black was born in Seattle on January 3, 1934, to Ruth Wallbom Cameron and Walter Cameron. She passed away on March 15, 2014 in Moses Lake. Although a lifelong resident of Moses Lake, Judy was born and raised in Seattle, and attended high school on Orcas Island where her parents owned and operated Sea Acres Resort. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Seattle. She then attended her beloved University of Washington, and pledged Alpha Phi sorority, always deeming any color even remotely purple to be “Husky colors.” It was at the UW that she met the love of her life, George Black, “No. 9" on the Husky football team. She graduated with a degree in Finance and married George while he attended dental school. Judy and George moved to Moses Lake in the early 60s, after George finished dental and orthodontic school and he set up his orthodontic practice, and they raised their family here. Over the years, Judy enjoyed and was involved in countless activities, and supported her children’s many different sports endeavors. She was a member of the P.E.O. sisterhood, several bridge clubs, an investment club and a supper club, and even a bowling team. She was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon and an elder. She was well known as an amazing gourmet cook and an avid sportswoman, whether fishing for king salmon around Orcas Island or Telegraph Cove, B.C., or clam digging with the family at Ocean Shores every year. She learned how to snow ski later in life, with her teenage children when they learned. Although she didn’t hunt, she enjoyed learning to creatively broil, saute, roast or barbecue all the wild game the men brought home. This was mostly clams, oysters, duck, pheasant, deer and elk, but one year it also memorably included a 400-lb moose. She loved her riding lawn mower, gardening and reading, and her many close friends, who will miss her dearly. She lived life to the fullest and enjoyed it immensely, and we will always remember her laughter with her close friends Mary Courtright, Marian Dinham and Pudge Sedlacek. Judy is survived by her husband of 58 years, Dr. George E. Black, and her children, Susan Black-Smith (Prentice Smith) of Stanwood, Barbara Black (Jon Olsen) of Moses Lake, and Eric Black (Dr. Lilo Mannion- Black) of Pasco, and grandchildren Sarah Smith, Bryan Black and Brady Black, and yellow lab, Olaf, in the family home. Mom, we will miss you and love you every day, but we take great comfort in knowing that you are no longer in pain, and are at peace. There will be a memorial celebration of Judy’s life on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the Moses Lake Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p.m.
